Mandevillas: beautiful but not bee-utiful
Does the Mandevilla plant attract lots of bees? No. Mandevillas attract pollinators like butterflies and hummingbirds but not bees.
How often will I need to replace the Mandevillas? IIn temperate climates, the mandevilla will die from frost in the Fall. You can replant you Living Umbrella with mandevillas in the Spring once the threat of frost is gone. Replanting dates can range from April to May depending on you climate/hardiness zone. If you live in locations with year-round warmth and no frost, then the mandevillas will last multiple years.
How often do the Mandevillas need to be watered? Mandevilla's nickname is "Rock Trumpet" because it grows on very dry soil in its native tropical environment. Our solar-powered, self-sufficient irrigation system is set to water for three minutes each morning every day of the week. If you are watering your mandevillas manually then you can water every 2 to 3 days during the Summer.
Can I add my own plants? Where do I get them? We recommend the Sun Parasol® Giant Mandevillas, but you can absolutely use your other plants! Just make sure they are vining plants suitable for your climate/hardiness zone. You can even grow food, like cherry tomatoes, cucumbers and canteloupe, on your umbrella. Visit your nearest home improvement store or plant nursery to find other plants.

What are the benefits of the Living Umbrella®? We’re so glad you asked! There are many, including:
- combating the urban heat island effect
- attracting pollinators (but not bees!)
- cleaning air pollutants
- stormwater retention
- providing natural shade and beauty
- reducing plastic use and waste (that old-fashioned canopy on your patio umbrella is most likely made from Nylon, a potent greenhouse gas that adds to global warming)
